What Is High Potential and Gifted Education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our High Potential and Gifted Education Opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In Our Classroom

At Bradfordville Public School, high potential and gifted education (HPGE) is seamlessly woven into our everyday learning experiences. Many of our students demonstrate outstanding abilities, and we are dedicated to nurturing these talents into meaningful growth and achievement.

Our educators carefully identify each student’s unique learning needs within the classroom and employ evidence-based strategies to extend and challenge their skills. We offer a range of learning pathways, including enrichment activities, extension tasks, and acceleration where appropriate. Students are identified by teachers—along with valuable insights from families during our Building Strong Connections Meetings—as having high potential or giftedness across cognitive, creative, physical, or social-emotional domains. This information is shared across the school to provide tailored support for every learner.

We foster inclusive and supportive classroom environments that promote a strong sense of belonging, creativity, risk-taking, and teamwork. Gifted students, especially in the cognitive domain, receive targeted instruction designed to meet their individual challenges through open-ended tasks and enrichment opportunities.

Our approach features flexible groupings, leadership opportunities, and feedback focused on strengths, with clear goals and self-reflection to guide personal growth.

Our practices are aligned with the NSW Department of Education’s HPGE policy, emphasising the importance of supporting giftedness across four key domains:

  • Creative Domain: Encouraging students to cultivate original ideas and express themselves through creative thinking, problem-solving, and the arts.
  • Intellectual (Cognitive) Domain: Providing stimulating learning experiences that develop advanced thinking, deep inquiry, and intellectual growth.
  • Physical Domain: Supporting physical development and wellbeing through activities that enhance coordination, health, and motor skills.
  • Social-Emotional Domain: Building emotional resilience, self-awareness, leadership capabilities and positive social skills to promote wellbeing for gifted learners.

At Bradfordville Public School, we are committed to nurturing the whole child by recognising and supporting each student’s potential across these domains, ensuring every learner is empowered to thrive and succeed.

Across Our School and Wider Community

At Bradfordville Public School, we offer a comprehensive range of High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) opportunities within the school and community beyond to support the development of our students’ diverse talents across multiple domains, helping them build important skills for lifelong success.

Social Domain:
Students strengthen leadership, communication, and collaboration skills through active participation in the Student Representative Council (SRC), where they have a voice in school decisions. Peer Support programs foster empathy, mentoring, and teamwork as older students guide younger peers. The GRIP Leadership workshops develop confidence, goal-setting, and problem-solving abilities. Through leading structured play activities, students practise social organisation, responsibility, and conflict resolution.

Physical Domain:
Our extensive sporting opportunities, including PSSA teams, knockout competitions, GALA days, development programs, and the Premier’s Sporting Challenge, focus on building physical fitness, teamwork, resilience, and strategic thinking. Students enhance coordination, sportsmanship, and goal-orientation while enjoying healthy competition and personal growth.

Creative Domain:
Creative expression and critical thinking flourish in our PULSE dance and choir groups, where students develop rhythm, performance skills, and artistic confidence. Participation in GCOPS concerts and Braddy on Stage performances nurtures public presentation and self-expression. The Public Speaking Competition and QUOTA challenge students to refine their verbal communication, persuasive techniques, and self-assurance. Art Club encourages creativity, fine motor skills, and visual problem-solving. Our music development programs build technical skills, auditory discrimination, and musical collaboration. We also honour and integrate First Nations cultures by incorporating Indigenous perspectives, stories, and artistic traditions into our creative programs, offering students meaningful opportunities to connect with and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage through visual arts, dance, music, and storytelling.

Cognitive Domain:
Students engage in cognitive extension groups that foster higher-order thinking, problem-solving, and inquiry skills. STEM and robotics activities develop logical reasoning, engineering concepts, and teamwork through hands-on challenges. The 3D printing projects encourage design thinking, spatial awareness, and digital literacy. Chess club strengthens strategic planning, concentration, and foresight. Science challenges and experiments promote curiosity, hypothesis testing, and analytical skills, allowing students to deepen their understanding of scientific principles through practical application.

Through these targeted programs, Bradfordville Public School nurtures the whole child, ensuring gifted and high potential students are challenged and supported to cultivate their abilities, build confidence, and achieve excellence in a rich and inclusive school environment.
